Bladensburg honors James Harris Jr. was honored as a hero by the Bladensburg Town Council for trying to save the life of a resident at the Emerson House independent living apartment building for seniors, where Harris works as an engineer. In early August, Harris found a resident unresponsive in his apartment and performed CPR on him until emergency services arrived. Jackson invited Edmonston Mayor Adam Ortiz to join the agency Local Government Advisory Committee for a year. The LGAC is chartered under the Federal Advisory Committee Act and designated to provide advice and recommendations to the EPA on how to build state and local government ability to provide environmental services to the public. During his term that will last until Aug. 30, 2011, Ortiz will be representing local mayors. King Middle salutes Renaissance Roll recipients Twelve students at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Beltsville were named Sept. 3 to the school's weekly Renaissance Roll. The Renaissance Roll program honors students who exhibit good citizenship and academic achievement. Each nominee is given a "Renaissance Living the Dream" card, which is then placed in a weekly drawing. Prizes this week were pens, pencils, folders and pouches. The winners for Sept. Gordon Pracht and Master Police Officers Scott Kaiser, Scott Yankowy, and Gordon Rose of the Greenbelt Police Department received Traffic Safety Specialist, or TSS, certification from the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. The TSS program recognizes officers of advanced achievements in traffic safety. Each officer who applies for the certification has to meet training requirements, such as report writing and attending certain training courses. There are multiple levels of certification, or designation. Kaiser was among the four officers in Maryland to receive TSS 2 designation. Pracht, Yankowy and Rose received TSS 1 designation. Laurel Mayor Craig Moe and Laurel Police Department Chief David M. Crawford announced a new Citizen Police Academy to start Sept. 30.
