Branch River Theatre does RENT Branch River Theatre, a small, community playhouse based in Marlboro, NH sold out all of their performances of Jonathan Larson's musical, RENT (July 1, 2, 7 9, and 10 at 7:30.) They sold out so fast that director, Paul Teitelman, had to add one performance due to sheer demand. For this particular production, the crew reversed the playhouse. That is, they installed make shift seats on what is normally the stage, and built up a New York City looking set where they audience normally sits. This small, cramped theatre isn't what RENT calls for, but the cast and crew made it work nonetheless. Aaron Howland (Roger) is the shining star of this talented cast. His grasp of Roger's angst and personal struggles are utterly apparent in his physical and verbal delivery of his (few) lines and music. He plays this part, if possible, better than its original occupant, Adam Pascal. His voice is just rock enough to convey how hard Roger is, yet his delivery counterbalances his hard exterior with an unbelievable warmth. Leila Teitelman (Maureen) and Tamar Teitelman (Mimi) are both talented young performers, though perhaps slightly miscast. Daughters of the director, the Teitelman sisters are excellent singers and mostly convincing performers, but fail to do any belting, a singing technique essential to both roles, and made infamous by Maureen's original portrayer, Idina Menzel. While it is not wise to attempt to copy her technique, it is also less than convincing to hit some of the "beltier" elements of Maureen and Mimi's song with a sweet, classically trained sound. Jason Pagan (Collins) and Sean Driscoll (Angel) are an adorable on stage couple. Pagan's portrayal of Collins is moving and heart wrenching; he appears to have so much love for his on stage counterpart, Driscoll. While Driscoll's dance moves and general movement scream "straight boy!," he and Pagan have such excellent chemistry that it doesn't matter. Courtney Swift (Joanne) doesn't come across as powerfully as Joanne should, but her voice is velvet. She is such a pleasure to listen to, and she wears some hot suspenders. All in all, the cast and crew get 3.5 out of 5 stars from this critic. Although there are some elements of this interpretation of RENT that register just as so so (for instance, the lack of belting women throughout the entire production, and the lackadaisical sound crew), there are some parts that are spot on. It's worth checking out this show for Howland's portrayal of Roger alone. As a self proclaimed Fat Advocate, fashionista, and hot event planner, she knows a thing or two about looking great, feeling great, and getting your money's worth. She is presently working on a history of high heeled shoes from the 1400s through the present, offering insightful and thought provoking information on their complex implications in society.
